This project will completely restore the exterior and interior of Altgeld Hall (76,500 GSF), the second-oldest building on campus and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to a world-class academic enterprise while preserving the building’s historical integrity. Significant exterior renovations will take place, including the removal of all (2,026) exterior windows at both buildings, their openings repaired, and new insulated windows installed. The existing precast façade will be repaired, and the exterior walls will be insulated to enhance the thermal performance of the building envelope. Nearly 30,000 SF of roofing will be removed to repair the roof structure and underlayment. In some areas of the building, the existing clay tile and stone shingles will be salvaged and reinstalled. In other places, a new, fully adhered roof will be installed over tapered insulation.
The existing Illini Hall will be demolished, and a new, 125,000-square-foot facility will be built in its place to provide a world-class space for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The building program includes an innovative data science center, administrative office, and support spaces, as well as multipurpose gathering areas, lecture halls, and classrooms, all connected by a custom-built 6-story spiral staircase. Additionally, Illini Hall will utilize an underground holding tank with a harvesting and filtration system to collect storm water for non-potable use.
